DBpedia is a community effort to extract structured information from Wikipedia and to make this information available on the Web. Knowledge bases are playing an increasingly important role in enhancing the intelligence of Web and enterprise search, E-Government applications as well as in supporting information integration. Wikipedia has grown into one of the central knowledge sources of mankind, maintained by thousands of contributors. The DBpedia project leverages this gigantic source of knowledge by extracting structured information from Wikipedia and by making this information freely accessible on the Web. The DBpedia knowledge base currently describes more than 3.5 million things, out of which 1.67 million are classified in a consistent ontology. It features labels and abstracts for these 3.5 million things in up to 97 different languages. Altogether consists of over 672 million pieces of information (RDF triples). The DBpedia knowledge base is served as Linked Data on the Web. As DBpedia defines Linked Data URIs for millions of concepts, various data providers have started to set RDF links from their data sets to DBpedia, making DBpedia one of the central interlinking-hubs of the ermerging Web of Data. In this talk we give an overview on DBpedia and showcase applications making use of this giant source of structured knowledge.

Dr. Sören Auer é lider do grupo de pesquisa em Engenharia do Conhecimento Ágil e Web Semântica (AKSW) na Universität Leipzig. Possui interesse nas áreas de tecnologias de web semântica, representação do conhecimento, engenharia e gerência, usabilidade, metodologias ágeis, bancos de dados e sistemas de informação. Sören busca combinar resultados teóricos de importância com aplicações práticas de alto impacto. É autor de mais de 50 publicações científicas em peer-review, alcançando o índice Hirsch de 15. Sören é líder do projeto “LOD2 - Creating Knowledge out of Interlinked Data”, um projeto de pesquisa de larga escala integrando EU-FP7-ICT. Sören é fundador (respectivamente co-fundador) de diversos projetos de pesquisa como DBPedia (projeto de semantificação da Wikipedia) e OntoWiki (toolkit social para a Web Semântica). É co-organizador de diversos workshops, chair dos eventos I-Semantics 2008, OKCON 2010, ESWC 2010 e ICWE 2011, editor do Semantic Web Journal, trabalha como especialista para indústria, Comissão Europeia e W3C, e é membro do conselho consultivo da Open Knowledge Foundation.
